Why did my dentist recommend a procedure that my dental insurance does not cover?
Dentists take an oath of beneficence; the principle that guides the ethical theory to do what is good. Under this principle, the dentist’s primary obligation is service to the patient and the public-at-large. Dentists may choose to enter into contracts governing the provision of care to a group of patients (such as dental insurance); however, contract obligations do not excuse dentists from their ethical duty to put the patient’s welfare first.* Your dentist will make recommendations to you based on your best interest. It is your decision how to proceed once these recommendations are presented.
